Pune: The PMC has taken a unique decision to collect property tax of around Rs.8,500 crore. A call center was opened to implement that decision. The civic body started with a target of 50,000 calls per month.

The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) first tried to interact directly with petty tax evaders through a dedicated call center. Currently making 1,000 calls out of 1,200 calls per day from the call center.

This call center is also active on weekends. “The administration wants to intensify the recovery drive. Further steps will be taken from the headquarters and ward offices,” explained Madhav Jagtap, head of PMC’s property tax department.

“Taxpayers do not want to give too many discounts to defaulters. The administration should ensure that the same defaulters do not get the benefit of the scheme more than once,” said Vivek Velankar of citizen group Sajag Nagarik Manch.

The state government has directed the Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation to collect property tax at the old rates before 2017 from the residents of 27 villages. This will provide relief to lakhs of property tax holders. This decision was taken in a meeting with several officials, including the Chief Minister.
